Problems importing a 720p 16x9 video into iMovie

OK, this is driving me nuts! I have a Samsung HMX-100 camcorder that records video into 720p 16x9 at 60fps in mp4 format onto an SDHC Card. However, when I try to import this video into iMovie 9.0.2 from the SD Card, it squeezes the video, placing black bars on the top and bottom of the video. I am trying to edit this video as a 16x9 video and although the source video is ALREADY 16x9, iMovie somehow changes the aspect ratio, squeezing the top and bottom of the video and I have no clue how to stretch out the video to fill the 16x9 frame! How come iMovie doesn't realize that the video I'm importing is ALREADY 16x9???

This seems to be a problem in general because even when I try to import that video off the SD card into itunes, or even PREVIEW it or the thumbnail on my iMac, the video is squished. Yet, when I play the source video on VLC player it understands the source video is 16x9 and plays it in the correct aspect ratio. I also am trying to upload the source video directly to youtube and even youtube does this SQUISHING shit, adding unnecessary black bars to the top and bottom of the video. Here's a screenshot so you can see what I'm talking about.

You can see here on itunes after I've imported the video. The video on the left is in the proper 16x9 resolution. The 2 videos to the right of that (and the video on the far right) are the same source video imported from the SD card but they are squished down. Why is this happening?

I just confirmed that when i upload the SOURCE VIDEO directly to youtube, even youtube squishes the video down. So, I don't know why this is happening. Apparently, Apple and Youtube don't like my camera or the format it records in.
